The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | Orbits and masses of twenty double stars discovered by Paul Couteau In this article we present the orbits and masses of 20 double starsdiscovered by P. Couteau at the Nice Observatory (France), namely WDS01450+2703 (COU 750), 03321+4340 (1688), 03423+3141 (691), 06503+2409(768), 12409+2708 (596),14138+3059 (606), 15390+2545 (612), 16584+3943(1289), 17075+3810 (1291), 17221+2310 (415), 18035+ 4032 (1785),18043+4206 (1786), 19089+3404 (1462), 19180+2012 (321), 20151+3742(2416), 20216+1930 (327 AB), 21593+4606 (2138), 22077+2622 (537),22307+1758 (234) and 23199+2844 (439). For two of these stars, COU 750and COU 1289, these are the first orbits to be published other than IAUCirculars; for the others, previously published orbits are improved onby those presented here. Star masses were in fifteen cases calculatedfrom Hipparcos parallax data, and in the other five from dynamicalparallaxes; in all cases, the error is estimated. Some of the otherphysical and orbital properties of these stars are also discussed.All the figures and tables are only available in electronic form athttp://www.edpsciences.org
| Kinematics of Hipparcos Visual Binaries. II. Stars with Ground-Based Orbital Solutions This paper continues kinematical investigations of the Hipparcos visualbinaries with known orbits. A sample, consisting of 804 binary systemswith orbital elements determined from ground-based observations, isselected. The mean relative error of their parallaxes is about 12% andthe mean relative error of proper motions is about 4%. However, even 41%of the sample stars lack radial velocity measurements. The computedGalactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters are usedto divide the stars with known radial velocities into kinematical agegroups. The majority (92%) of binaries from the sample are thin diskstars, 7.6% have thick disk kinematics and only two binaries have halokinematics. Among them, the long-period variable Mira Ceti has a verydiscordant {Hipparcos} and ground-based parallax values. From the wholesample, 60 stars are ascribed to the thick disk and halo population.There is an urgent need to increase the number of the identified halobinaries with known orbits and substantially improve the situation withradial velocity data for stars with known orbits.
| ICCD Speckle Observations of Binary Stars. XXIII. Measurements during 1982-1997 from Six Telescopes, with 14 New Orbits We present 2017 observations of 1286 binary stars, observed by means ofspeckle interferometry using six telescopes over a 15 year period from1982 April to 1997 June. These measurements constitute the 23dinstallment in CHARA's speckle program at 2 to 4 m class telescopes andinclude the second major collection of measurements from the MountWilson 100 inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope. Orbital elements are alsopresented for 14 systems, seven of which have had no previouslypublished orbital analyses.
| An astrometric catalogue for the area of Coma Berenices A catalogue of stellar positions and proper motions down to the 14thphotographic magnitude in the area of the open cluster in Coma Berenicesis compiled from data of 12 different sources. The accuracy of theproper motion data is comparable to that of the Hipparcos Catalogue. | Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5
| All-sky Stromgren photometry of speckle binary stars All-sky Stromgren photometric observations were obtained for 303 specklebinaries. Most stars were in the range of V = 5-8. These data, whencombined with ratios of intensities from the CHARA speckle photometryprogram, will allow the determination of photometric indices for theindividual components of binary stars with separations as small as 0.05arcsec. These photometric indices will complement the stellar massesfrom the speckle interferometry observations to provide a much improvedmass-luminosity relationship.
| ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. IV - Measurements during 1986-1988 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope One thousand five hundred and fifty measurements of 1006 binary starsystems observed mostly during 1986 through mid-1988 by means of speckleinterferometry with the KPNO 4-m telescope are presented. Twenty-onesystems are directly resolved for the first time, including newcomponents to the cool supergiant Alpha Her A and the Pleiades shellstar Pleione. A continuing survey of The Bright Star Catalogue yieldedeight new binaries from 293 bright stars observed. Corrections tospeckle measures from the GSU/CHARA ICCD speckle camera previouslypublished are presented and discussed.
| Fe/H, age and distance for the F-stars of an unbiased radial velocity sample at the north Galactic pole New limits for the normalization of stellar populations of the solarneighborhood have been suggested by Sandage and Fouts (1987). Log T(e),M(V), Fe/H abundance ratio, age A, distance and color excess arepresented for 183 stars of Sandage and Fouts' unbiased radial velocitysample located near the north Galactic pole.
| Measurements of binary stars obtained at Pic-du-Midi and at Nice A total of 112 visual measurements of 82 close binaries observed with 2mtelescope at Pic-du-Midi are presented. In addition, 344 measurements of163 close binaries were observed with the 74-cm and 50-cm refractors atNice. All measurements were made by a micrometer with illuminated wires.
| Kinematics and properties of F stars near the North Galactic Pole. II - The isothermal disc Radial velocities are given for about 550 photometrically-identifieddisk-population F stars lying within 15 deg of the North Galactic Pole.The overall radial and z-velocity distributions are found to be closelyGaussian, with corrected rms and mean z velocities of 11.3 + or - 0.6and -9.5 + or - 0.5 km/s, respectively. The isothermal kinematics of thepopulation are reflected in the constant velocity dispersion to a zdistance of 400 pc. No systematic variation of either the velocitydispersion or the stellar age with the metallicity-sensitive Stromgrendelta m1 index is noted over a range of ages up to 5 Gyr.
| ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. II - Measurements during 1982-1985 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope This paper represents the continuation of a systematic program of binarystar speckle interferometry initiated at the 4 m telescope on Kitt Peakin late 1975. Between 1975 and 1981, the observations were obtained witha photographic speckle camera, the data from which were reduced byoptical analog methods. In mid-1982, a new speckle camera employing anintensified charge-coupled device as the detector continued the programand necessitated the development of new digital procedures for reducingand analyzing speckle data. The camera and the data-processingtechniques are described herein. This paper presents 2780 newmeasurements of 1012 binary and multiple star systems, including thefirst direct resolution of 64 systems, for the interval 1982 through1985.
| U, V, W velocity components for the old disk using radial velocities of 1295 stars in the three cardinal Galactic directions New radial velocities are presented for 1295 stars chosen at random nearthe three cardinal Galactic directions of l = 180 deg, b = 0; l = 90deg, b = 0 deg; and b = 90 deg, giving the distribution in U, V, and W,respectively, from the radial velocities alone. The measurements weremade with the coude spectrograph of the Mount Wilson 100 in. Hookerreflector. The purpose of the program is to set limits on the densitynormalization in the solar neighborhood of the old thin disk, the oldthick disk, and the halo. Many more high-velocity stars are present inthe unbiased sample than expected from previous estimates of thenormalization. The data suggest the density ratios in the solarneighborhood to be about 90 percent, 10 percent, and about 0.5 percentfor the thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations, respectively.
| Micrometer measurements of visual binaries A total of 376 micrometer measurements of 116 visual binaries made atthe Nice Observatory, France, in the years 1980-1983 is presented. Eachpair is identified by the A.D.S. number, the name of the couple, and theB.D. number. The next line gives the I.D.S. number, the A.D.S.magnitudes, and the spectral types. This is followed by the epoch of theobservation, the observed position angle and distance of the components,and the aperture of the refractor used. The means and the residuals fromknown orbits are given in the next lines. The symbol 'N' denotes thatthe observations were made with a 74-cm refractor; the symbol 'n'denotes a 50-cm refractor.

| Measurements of binary stars made at Nice Results are presented for 753 measurements of 267 binary stars that weremade with the 50- and 74-cm refractors at Nice Observatory. Coordinatesfor the equinox of 1950 are provided, along with apparent magnitudes,spectral types, and probable periods. It is noted that three-quarters ofthese systems are recently discovered close binaries.
